An electric stun gun or electroshock device is a non-lethal, meaning non-fatal, weapon intended for necessary self-defense and defense against aggressive or dangerous animals, based on the effects of electric current.
Types of electric stun guns:
We know two types of electric stun guns: the stun gun itself, which works on the principle of direct contact with a person, and also works through a thicker layer of clothing. These are classic electroshock devices, baton-type stun guns, stun guns in the shape of a mobile phone or a flashlight. The second type is the so-called taser, which fires a "projectile" that is directly connected to the stun gun by an electric wire. The advantage of this type is indirect contact with the attacker and a range of up to 10m. The projectile gently embeds itself under the attacker's skin and transfers an electric discharge into them of up to several million volts via the wires. The current causes the striated muscles of the person to cramp, leaving them unable to move for several minutes.

The scientist Jack Cover was the first to begin assembling the first form of the electric weapon in 1969, which he completed in 1974 and named the electric rifle. It was introduced as a weapon in 1976, but the patent was later modified by the company Nova Technologies in 1983. They manufactured the first handheld stun gun, which was given the name Nova XR-5000. The design they produced is still copied and used all over the world today. However, in today's modern era, so-called hidden stun guns also exist, for example in the shape of a mobile phone. It is merely an imitation of a phone, but it can confuse an attacker.
The principle on which the stun gun works:
Electroshock devices use a temporary high voltage and low current. This creates an enormous voltage, which does not kill the attacker, only temporarily deters them, either through strong pain or temporary paralysis. There are various places on the body that are more sensitive and vulnerable than others, for example the shoulder, areas below the chest, or the hips.
The internal electrical circuit of the stun gun is very simple, based on an oscillator or voltage multiplier. Here, the conversion of low voltage into high voltage takes place, where the electrical circuit can convert a voltage of 9V into several 100,000V up to 1,000,000V. The power supply varies and depends on the type of stun gun, either 1.5V batteries, 9V batteries, or a built-in battery pack, in which case a charger is also supplied with the product.
Attention! A stun gun affects each individual differently, and everything depends on several factors such as physical fitness, skin moisture, the thickness of the clothing through which the charge must pass, and the condition of the batteries or battery pack. Therefore, the effects can always vary, and particular caution should be exercised.
Manufacturers state that:
- 1 second causes intense pain and muscle cramps.
- 2 - 3 seconds can cause disorientation and falling to the ground
- 3 or more seconds causes falling to the ground, muscle cramps, and disorientation for several minutes
Use:
Tasers and stun guns are more or less used by armed forces, police, military, assault units or also by security services (SBS) or supervision at sporting events, where there is a greater risk of mass disturbances and fights. It is not as commonly used a means of coercion here as batons or tear gas. In our country, the taser is classified as a red-category item and its sale is prohibited here, as is its use. We hope that you will not have to use this device often so that you do not unnecessarily get into conflict situations, but a person at least has some certainty that something will always protect them in dark alleys or on the road. Finally, I will also mention the law, which clearly states that only persons who have reached the age of 18 or more may possess such a non-lethal weapon, and their use should only be in cases of extreme necessity and necessary defense.
Exact wording of the law on extreme necessity and necessary defense:
§24 – Extreme necessity
- An act otherwise criminal, by which someone averts a danger directly threatening an interest protected by this law, is not a criminal offense.
- It is not extreme necessity if it was possible to avert the danger directly threatening an interest protected by this law otherwise under the given circumstances, or if the resulting consequence is clearly more serious than the one that was threatening. Likewise, it is not extreme necessity if the person to whom the danger was directly threatening was, under a generally binding legal regulation, obliged to bear it.
§25 - Necessary defense
- An act otherwise criminal, by which someone averts a directly threatening or ongoing attack on an interest protected by this law, is not a criminal offense. Page 304 Collection of Laws No. 300/2005 Part 129.
- It is not necessary defense if the defense was quite clearly disproportionate to the attack, especially with regard to its manner, place and time, and the circumstances relating to the person of the attacker or the person of the defender.
- A person who averts an attack in the manner mentioned in paragraph 2 will not be criminally liable if they acted in a state of strong agitation caused by the attack, especially as a result of confusion, fear or fright.
- If someone, given the circumstances of the case, mistakenly believes that an attack is threatening, this does not exclude criminal liability for an act committed through negligence, if the mistake consists in negligence.
§26 - Legitimate use of a weapon
- The use of a weapon in accordance with the law is not a criminal offense.
- The use of a weapon in accordance with the law is also considered to include its use against another person in one's home to protect life, health or property, if the person unlawfully enters the home or unlawfully remains in it and it is not a case of necessary defense. This does not apply if death was intentionally caused to another person in doing so.
