Bushcraft

Bushcraft, woodcraft, for some a new trend that prevails among people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. This life in the wild or getting to know nature the way our ancestors did is a way to enjoy nature without feeling pressured that there is either a „right“ or a „wrong“ way to do it. If it happens that you are doing it wrong, you will find out very easily. Because you will have to go home earlier, since you are freezing or starving. :-)
If you love nature, spend a lot of time in it, know how to start a fire, build a shelter or generally survive in the forest without the help of modern technology, you are probably a Bushcrafter and don't even know it. However, you can still learn something new.

And we offer you 10 bushcraft tips for survival in nature:

  1. The first important point is setting up a shelter. You might think that there are more important things than making a fire, finding food, finding water, but you are wrong. The most important thing is to secure a shelter, because you may not know it, but you can survive 3 days without water, but only 3 hours without shelter. This is due to hypothermia, which is a real killer. Hypothermia can hit you before you even notice. That is why it is most important to have a shelter, dry ground, which will protect you from the cold and possibly from wildlife
  2. The second thing you need to do is make a fire and know how to use the resources around you, even in wet conditions. And especially without using matches or lighters. You should be able to do it only with the help of a stone, branches and leaves. You should also be skilled enough to be able to transfer the fire and keep it going in place.
  3. The third skill is definitely finding, collecting and purifying water. When your body feels dehydration, it can affect your physical fitness, which could backfire on you. Therefore, place your shelter somewhere near a water source. It is important to filter the water (using a scarf) to avoid impurities, and then filter it again to kill any remaining bacteria or pathogens. In winter, you should have an advantage, because you can obtain water from melted snow.
  4. If you were still waiting for the point about finding food, here it comes. You should be able to use nature and find various kinds of fruit, nuts, seeds and other wild edible products that you can eat without cooking, to get extra calories. To be safe, however, you should not neglect knowledge of wild plants, which can harm you, but also save your life.
  5. A basic step is also using a knife or an axe. This is important for your safety and also important, for example, for fishing or the aforementioned shelter building. Throughout all of this, you must also know how to store, repair and sharpen your blade.
  6. For your safe survival in the wilderness it is important to know how to treat wounds that may occur. That is why it is good to have completed a first aid course, during which you can also ask about treating wounds in nature, especially regarding sealing a wound or how to make a splint. It is important to have at least some first aid book in your bag, along with a comprehensive kit.
  7. The seventh point is land navigation, which is really good to master. It has probably happened to you many times that you got lost even somewhere in the city. It is even worse to get lost in the forest. That is why you need to be careful so that you can always find your way back. The most essential thing is to know how to use a compass and a map. Besides that, reading the sun, watching the stars or following the flow of water can help you. A useful trick is also knowing that moss always grows on the northern side.
  8. Do you want to look at home in nature? You also need to camouflage yourself. This can help you hide food, hide yourself, or even stalk prey.
  9. The second-to-last important skill is the art of hunting. It is harder than fishing or trapping. It can happen that you draw too much attention to yourself. That is why you need to know how to track an animal, how to use a bow or a firearm, you need to watch out for bites, you need to know what the animal is about to do (read it), and finally, know how to tie strong knots. Then you are ready to hunt.
  10. The last step, which is also very important, is ENJOY IT. Rest, switch off your head from the rush, from this stressful world. There, it is just you, your thoughts and nature.
