LOWA Z-6N MK2 GTX PR – new generation mid-height nubuck tactical boots

LOWA Z-6N MK2 GTX PR is a new generation of versatile tactical and service boots from the Z-6N range. It replaces the proven LOWA Z-6N GTX C model and is designed for soldiers, police officers, members of security forces, rescue workers and demanding outdoor users who need durable, stable boots for rough terrain and for treks with a moderately heavy backpack.

Compared to its predecessor, the Z-6N GTX C, the MK2 GTX PR version brings four key changes: textile puncture protection, the new LOWA® TACTICAL 2 ESD sole, a PFC-free GORE-TEX PROFESSIONAL membrane and a shaft that is 15 mm higher (175 mm instead of 160 mm). The original model was certified to EN ISO 20347:2012 in class O2, i.e. without puncture protection – the new generation meets the current EN ISO 20347:2022 standard in class O3S. The character of the Z-6N has been retained: a durable nubuck upper, a stable injected construction and comfort for all-day wear.

The PR – puncture resistant designation indicates protection against puncture. A textile (non-metallic) insert integrated into the midsole protects the foot from nails, shards and other sharp objects. Unlike a metal plate, it does not conduct cold and keeps the sole flexible. The LOWA® TACTICAL 2 ESD sole is made from a rubber compound optimised for service use, features a special tread pattern in the midfoot area for more secure footing on ladders (ladder grip) and resists oils, fuels and contact heat.

The lining with a GORE-TEX PROFESSIONAL membrane (ePE, PFC-free) is waterproof and windproof, yet remains breathable even during physically demanding activity. The mid-height shaft (175 mm, inner height 140 mm) provides ankle support and stability, whilst giving the ankle more freedom of movement than the high Z-8 models. The injected PU midsole with varying degrees of hardness cushions impacts, stabilises each step and insulates against both heat and cold. The boots meet ESD requirements for dissipating electrostatic charge and feature closed lacing hooks that do not catch on ropes or equipment.

However, it should be noted that this is professional tactical footwear, not a soft urban shoe. The sturdy construction, nubuck upper and protective insert in the sole may feel more robust at first, and the boots require a short break-in period. Nubuck is very durable, but to retain its appearance and water repellency it needs regular cleaning and waterproofing – you will find instructions in the “Material & care” tab.

Who are the boots suitable for?

LOWA Z-6N MK2 GTX PR is suitable for users who need reliable tactical boots with a durable nubuck upper but do not want to opt for a high boot. LOWA recommends it for patrol duty, combat, special operations, parachute jumps and fast-roping (rapid descent down a rope). It is ideal for soldiers, police officers, members of security forces, rescue workers, field workers, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts looking for durable boots for service, longer treks or everyday wear in demanding conditions.

Compared to the Z-6S MK2 GTX PR model, the Z-6N has a nubuck upper instead of suede (velour) – it is more robust and more abrasion-resistant, whilst the suede Z-6S is more supple. The higher Z-8N MK2 GTX PR model has the same nubuck upper, sole and puncture protection, but a 210 mm shaft – it is the better choice if you carry heavier equipment or need maximum ankle support.

How to measure your foot and choose the right size

What to watch out forShoe sizes are not standardised. Every manufacturer builds on a different last, with a different instep height, a different toe shape and a different width. The number from your previous shoes therefore need not apply. The only reliable basis is the length of your foot – measure it before you buy.

Step 1: TracingTake off your socks. Place a sheet of paper against the wall and stand on it so that your heel touches the wall. Trace the outline of your toes with a pencil – hold the pencil exactly vertical, otherwise you will measure too much. Measure both feet, they differ in length, and measure in the late afternoon, when the foot has spread over the course of the day.

Step 2: Measure and find your sizeMeasure the distance from the edge of the paper (the heel) to the longest toe – it need not be the big toe. Go by the longer foot. Find the measured value in cm in the size chart. Do not add anything; LOWA has already included the room needed inside the shoe in the chart.

When trying the shoes on

• Try them on in the socks you will wear with them. On duty and in the field these are considerably thicker socks than for everyday wear.
• If your length falls between two sizes, choose the larger one. A short boot cannot be broken in, a larger one can be adjusted with a sock or an insole.
• Your toes must not hit the front – neither when standing nor when stepping down a stair. The heel must stay in place without lifting.
